about

"Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost" originated at the Back to the Garden 2018 festival (which is also where Howie and Shane met). Brent was debuting a music video for his single "One Car Parade". The video malfunctioned and he was unable to get the audio feed to work. After a couple of minutes of uncomfortable silence, Howie went onstage and accompanied the video (a time lapse of stars over Quiet Earth) on Theremin and Brent soon joined him on piano for a duet. It was well received and they discussed pursuing a project together, with it as a starting point. Howie labeled it with a line from the poem "All That Is Gold Does Not Glitter", written by J. R. R. Tolkien: All that is gold does not glitter Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes, a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king.

The phrase has been a popular bumper sticker since the 70's (usually misquoted as "Not All Those That Wander
Are Lost") ~ but, we digress...

Being the busy fellows that they are, a direct collaboration between Howie and Brent had not materialized when Howie was approached to play the Musicians Raise the Roof Festival in July of 2019. With his stranding projects being internet-based, he pitched the idea of putting something together with Brent and Kevan (both of whom had participated in his Chain Mail and Dervish State projects). Soon fellow Dervish State participants Anne and Brian were in the fold and they were followed shortly thereafter by Shane, Sean and Nicholas.

With three weeks to prepare an eight-piece band for a festival performance (and Kevan out of town for the majority of that), they managed to record this track without
having played together or ever being in the same room at once - and then squeezed in one rehearsal/photo shoot before the event.

This early version provides a glimpse into what was to come. Look for an album version on our debut album due Summer 2020.
